CLIENT SUCCESS STORIES

“I am truly thankful for Shamekah during this pregnancy and labor. Her spirit was very open and patient with me in every way. She has professional and personal experience with labor and delivery. This was my second pregnancy, and just having a doula present during labor made all of the difference from my first pregnancy labor. During labor, she was a positive enforcer, great support. Never pushy, just a gentle guide through my beautiful transition. She is a great listener, kind and great teacher. I'm so happy I chose her to share my journey with. I highly recommend Shamekah's doula services with any birth experience you choose.

Elisha

“I cannot recommend Shamekah highly enough as a doula! She was an absolute angel during my labor and delivery. With 11 years of experience as a labor and delivery nurse (and still working in that role today), she brought an incredible level of skill, compassion, and professionalism. Having her by my side felt like having a personal nurse completely focused on me, and her background helped her work seamlessly with the hospital staff.
Shameka’s guidance and support were the key to helping my body progress naturally and avoid interventions at every turn. I wasn’t completely opposed to them, but because my baby’s heart rate stayed stable and Shameka was able to help us use positions and gravity, we avoided many interventions.
Here’s how my birth unfolded: I was induced at 7 AM and ended up with two doses of Cytotec, and by evening, even though I had progressed consistently, there was talk of using additional interventions like a balloon. Through the day Shameka encouraged me to stay active—rocking on the ball, walking the halls, and using upright positions. Around 5 PM, during a walk around the halls, my water broke naturally. Whew!
As labor progressed, I decided to get an epidural. Even then, Shameka and the nurses helped me delay starting Pitocin as long as possible. She suggested laboring positions that worked with my epidural, keeping my labor moving forward while I stayed comfortable. When Eventually the doctors insisted on Pitocin, just as the nurse was about to administer my baby’s heart rate dropped. Shameka immediately suggested the nurse check me, and sure enough, I was fully dilated—avoiding the need for Pitocin.
The hardest part for me was pushing. My progress was slow, but Shameka kept me encouraged and constantly helped me rotate into new positions to keep things moving. She worked hand-in-hand with the nurses to keep my body working naturally. When my contractions slowed, I needed a little Pitocin to restart them, and then after 4 hours of pushing there was some talk of using a vacuum (baby's head was already showing). My body kicked in at the last minute and started the fetal ejection reflex, and my baby was born vaginally.
As a first-time mom being induced, my body took its time at every step of labor. Without Shameka’s dedication to helping me stay calm and comfortable, trying new positions, and avoiding unnecessary interventions, I truly believe my experience would have been much harder. Her focus on letting my body do the work naturally, while helping it along at the right moments, made all the difference.
If you’re considering hiring a doula, DO IT. Shameka was incredible—so sweet, professional, and never overbearing. She worked tirelessly to make sure I was comfortable, hydrated, clean, and informed throughout labor. Her services were also incredibly affordable for everything she offered. I know I couldn’t have done it without her.
Shameka was a godsend, I will always think of her as an angel, and I am so grateful for her and the amazing staff at Lawnwood Hospital. My birth experience wouldn’t have been the same without her!
